As you can see from the picture on the right a concrete wall alone is not strong enough to stop debris from a tornado. Tommy B. Tornado Shelters have been tested at the Texas Tech University Wind Science & Engineering Research Center. Each storm shelter has been tested to a Protocol 4. Protocol 4 is the highest-level test for a tornado shelter. In accordance with FEMA 320 the storm shelter must withstand a speed impact by a 15 lb. wood 2” x 4” propelled at 100 mph for a horizontal impact. This correlates to a wind speed from a tornado of 250 mph. Tommy B. Tornado Shelters meet the guidelines of FEMA 320 “Taking Shelter from the Storm” and ICC-500.

Our tornado shelters are build from a modular design, which allows it to be easily installed in both new construction and existing home. Assembly can be completed with a single wrench. The outside walls are made from formed 3/16” steel. The roof is made from ¼” formed steel channels. ½” grade five bolts and nuts are used to attach all the sides. Grade five bolts are used because they are less likely to snap on impacted when compared to grade eight bolts. All the nuts are pre-welded to the sides for quick assembly.

Three direct missile shoots tested Tommy B. Tornado Shelter’s door. The hinged door is designed to open inward so your family can still escape even if the door is blocked. The three modular back panels are designed to be removed from the inside giving your family yet another way to get out in case of an emergency.
